Start with the current CompTIA A+ objectives

Core 1 covers hardware, networking, mobile devices, virtualisation and cloud computing, while Core 2 covers operating systems, security, software troubleshooting and operational procedures.

Download the current objectives before choosing videos, books or practice questions. Training materials can remain online after an exam version has changed, and studying an outdated syllabus wastes time. Cross check every topic in your learning resource against the current objectives, particularly operating systems, security controls and cloud terminology.

Do not treat each objective as a word to learn. Ask what you would need to do with that knowledge in a support role. Knowing the name of a printer connection is less valuable than being able to work through why a printer is unavailable, whether the issue is the device, cable, network, driver, queue or user permissions.

Build a study routine you can sustain

Consistency matters more than trying to complete large blocks of study at the weekend. A realistic routine fits around work, family and other commitments, and includes time to revisit weak areas. Your first pass through the content should focus on understanding. Your second should focus on recall and application.

Set a clear order. Many learners find it easier to begin with hardware and basic networking, then move into operating systems and security. This creates a useful base for troubleshooting because you can picture how the parts of a system connect. If you already work around computers but have limited networking knowledge, start there instead. The right order depends on your gap, not on what another learner finds easiest.

Keep a short log of topics that slow you down. It might include IP addressing, command line tools, Windows recovery options, wireless security or printer faults. Use active recall, not passive viewing

Watching a lesson can make a topic feel familiar without proving that you can use it. Close the course material and explain the concept in your own words. Write down the steps you would take to diagnose a fault. Answer questions before looking at the answer choices.

For example, after learning about storage, practise distinguishing between a failing drive, a full drive and a permissions issue. After learning about networking, explain the difference between an address issue, a name resolution issue and a wireless connection issue. This is closer to the reasoning A+ assesses and the reasoning used at a service desk.

Flashcards can help with ports, connectors, commands and abbreviations, but they should support practical understanding rather than replace it. If you cannot explain why a command is useful, memorising its name will not help much when a scenario is worded differently.

Create a safe practice environment

Practical experience turns abstract topics into skills you can discuss at interview. You do not need an expensive home lab to begin. An existing computer, virtual machine software and a spare device can be enough to practise many operating system, user account and troubleshooting tasks.

Install a virtual version of Windows where your licence permits, create standard and administrator accounts, change settings, use system tools and practise recovery options. Learn where to find device information, storage information, network settings and event logs. Make a deliberate change, observe its effect and then reverse it. The aim is to become comfortable investigating rather than simply following a script.

You can also practise the method behind support work. Take a simple fault, write down the symptoms, list possible causes, test the least disruptive solution and record what resolved it. Good technicians do not guess repeatedly. They gather evidence, make a sensible next check and communicate clearly with the person affected.

Be careful with any practice involving security settings or business devices. Use your own equipment or an authorised environment. A+ includes security knowledge, but safe working and respect for access controls are part of professional IT practice.

Learn troubleshooting as a process

Troubleshooting is where many learners either become confident or get stuck. The answer is not to memorise hundreds of faults. Learn a repeatable process and apply it to different scenarios.

Start by confirming what is happening and what has changed. Ask whether the fault affects one person or several, one application or the whole device, and whether it began after an update, move, password change or hardware change. Then form a likely explanation, test it safely and check that the fix has worked. Record the outcome in plain language.

Look at junior IT support and service desk vacancies before you sit the exam.
