You don't need any prior experience working in IT to be eligible for our Cyber Security Job Programme, as initially it follows the same path as the IT Technician Job Programme. You just need an interest and desire to work on the technical side of IT and the drive to continue studying to build a cyber career.

A route from foundations to security analysis
You can start without previous IT employment. The first part of the programme builds knowledge of devices, networks and operating systems before moving into cloud services, security controls and analysis. If you have already studied some of these subjects, discuss your starting point with an advisor rather than assuming that you can skip assessed work.
A technical career involves explaining problems as well as solving them. As you study, keep notes about the task, the evidence you collected, the decisions you made and how you checked the result. That gives you specific examples to discuss during an interview, instead of relying only on a list of certifications.
Practical work alongside the courses
Live Labs give you a place to practise technical tasks alongside the learning material. The programme also includes two applied projects covering security and cloud computing. In the security project, the focus is on log monitoring and presenting findings; the cloud project involves configuring a security resource and monitoring activity.
Use the practical work to build a clear account of what you can do. Explain the purpose of each task, what normal behaviour looks like and what you would investigate next. Course exercises belong in training environments: permission and scope are essential when working with real systems.
Study around your current job
The programme is online and self-paced, with one year of access. The expected completion time is six to nine months, depending on your starting point, available study time and exam readiness. A completion estimate is not a promise of a job by a particular date.
Set aside regular time for new material, practical work and revision. Ask your tutor about topics you do not understand before moving on, and use your mentor to review progress. Before enrolling, discuss your availability, equipment and any accessibility needs so the plan is realistic.
Recruitment support and roles to consider
Support includes a CV and LinkedIn rewrite, interview preparation and recruitment help on completion. The right first role depends on your existing experience and demonstrated skills. IT support, service desk and junior security roles can each be relevant starting points; a SOC analyst role should be assessed against its actual responsibilities.
Review vacancies in the area where you can work and distinguish essential requirements from desirable ones. Shift patterns, location and experience requirements matter alongside the job title. Your advisor can explain how the programme and its recruitment conditions relate to your circumstances.
Commercial training and ELCAS are different packages
This £1,899 programme includes SC-900, Security+ and CySA+ exams. The separate ELCAS cyber programme includes Network+, Security+ and CySA+ exams. Do not assume that the funding route is the only difference: read the programme details and confirm the package on your enrolment paperwork.
